Mark Coure, Member for Oatley, has announced that construction has begun on a new $5.4 million housing project in Peakhurst that will provide homes to vulnerable local community members.
The Trafalgar Street complex will have 15 new homes and be a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom units with 16 car parking spaces.
Mr Coure said that this project would boost the economy and create local jobs.
“The upgrades to the Trafalgar Street complex will assist those in need in the local community by providing stable, modern fit-for-purpose housing,” Mr Coure said.
“The project will create 31 jobs, primarily in the construction industry, helping to deliver an immediate benefit to the local economy.”
“The complex’s upgrades also respond to the need for improved housing options in our local area.”
Melinda Pavey, Minister for Water, Property and Housing, said as our communities begin to recover from the impacts of COVID-19, social housing projects like this one provide much-needed jobs and income for the local construction industry and deliver new homes for those who need it most.
“The Peakhurst project demonstrates the smart approach we’re taking to growing our housing portfolio, by replacing ageing dwellings with well-designed homes that support the needs of local people and reflect the vision and values of the local community,” Mrs Pavey said.
The new complex is expected to be completed in mid-2021, with the first residents expected to begin tenancies shortly after.
This is the third upgrade to housing in the Peakhurst area with 25 new dwellings completed in two projects in 2018 and 2019.
This upgrade is part of the NSW Government’s Future Directions for Social Housing – a plan to drive better outcomes for tenants by providing improved social housing.
