Member for Oatley, Mark Coure today said CSG exploration in metropolitan Sydney, green-lighted under Labor, will not proceed after the NSW Government cancelled Petroleum Exploration Licence (PEL) 463, following a buy-back from resources company Dart Energy.

Mark Coure MP said PEL 463, granted by the former Labor Government in 2008, covered 189,402 hectares including  the St George and Sutherland shire areas and blanketed Sydney from as far south as Bundeena, to as far west as Rooty Hill in Western Sydney, and stretched north through Berowra Waters and Palm Beach to Gosford.

“Today we take another significant step to end Labor’s appalling coal seam gas legacy in this state,” Mark Coure said.

“Labor issued no less than 37 CSG licences across NSW with no regard for the environment or the welfare of local communities.

“It is hard to believe that the former Labor Government gave the green light for CSG exploration in an area that stretched so far across Sydney, taking in our National Parks, beaches and waterways, including Sydney Harbour.

“Whether you’re in the local area, in 2008 Labor gave the green light to CSG exploration in your neighbourhood.

“The Labor Party gave permission for CSG drilling to be undertaken at inner city St Peters – did anyone in the former Labor Government even question what was happening?”

Mark Coure said the Labor Party granted licences like confetti across NSW for just $1,000 each with little oversight and no protections for our water, agricultural land or environment.

“Luke Foley is now trying to rewrite history by pretending this deplorable mismanagement by Labor didn’t happen in an attempt to steal votes where it suits his election campaign,” Mark Coure said.

“The NSW Gas Plan clearly outlined how we would fix Labor’s mess and proceed with world’s best practice regulation on our terms. This included the PEL buy-back scheme.

“As we have demonstrated, actions speak louder than words. We’ve reduced the total area of NSW covered by PELs or PEL applications from almost 50 per cent under Labor to just 15 per cent.

“The NSW Liberals & Nationals Government is delivering - not just for voters in specific electorates, but for everyone across NSW.”
