Sunday, 27 January 2019

Member for Oatley Mark Coure MP welcomed 106 new doctors to the South East Sydney Local Health District, who were part of the new interns starting across the state.

Mr Coure today greeted and congratulated the 43 new doctors starting at St George Hospital.

“Interns are a vital part of the professional team at the frontline of the health system,” Mr Coure said.

“We are very happy to greet this new team of enthusiastic and talented doctors who want to make a difference, and develop their skills in the public health system.

“NSW has a record 1021 intern positions, more than any other state or territory, and 251 positions more than under Labor,” Mr Coure said.

“The NSW Liberals & National Government has invested close to three-quarters of a billion dollars in the internship program since 2011.

“Under Labor, the investment in the program was just $63 million in 2010.”

During their one-year internship, the graduates will complete compulsory terms in the specialties of medicine, surgery and emergency as required by the Medical Board of Australia. While the second year focuses on consolidating professional practice and experience in different clinical settings.

The interns will rotate through a network of metropolitan, regional or rural hospitals, as well as GP practices.

The 2018/19 State Budget has added 1,370 health staff, including 300 medical practitioners, 950 nurses and midwives and 120 allied health professionals – resulting in a record frontline clinical and clinical support staff of over 105,000 people.

The NSW Liberal Government has invested more than $353 million in the redevelopment of St George Hospital, including the completion of a new emergency department, a nine-storey Acute Services Building, upgrading the Cancer Care Centre and providing 108 additional car spaces at the Gray Street car park.

An additional $11.5 million was committed in the 2018/19 State Budget to relocate and expand the Birthing Unit at St George Hospital. This project is estimated to be completed mid-2019.
