St George Community Awards 2020

Thursday, 19 November 2020
This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the St George Community Awards with 102 individuals, community groups and businesses receiving awards.

On Wednesday 4 November 2020 Member for Oatley, Mark Coure, began handing out these awards which recognise some of the outstanding individuals and organisations from across the St George area, despite being unable to host a large event.

"I am always proud to personally recognise the achievements of these deserving recipients who continually build on our fantastic community culture here within the St George community,” Mr Coure said.

"Volunteering and looking out for those in need is so important and this has been crucial given the year we have had with drought, bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic.”
In order to uphold the COVID advice promoted by NSW Health, recipients met in small groups throughout the community to honour their achievements while maintaining social distancing requirements.

“Considering the difficult year our community has had with the recent pandemic, I decided to venture out into the community to assess how the pandemic has affected their work and how they have overcome these challenges to give back to those in need,” Mr Coure said.

The award categories include Individual Volunteer Achievement Award, Youth Achievement Award, Senior Volunteer Achievement Award, Community Group Award, Sports Achievement Award, Business Achievement Award and Environmental Achievement Award.

“I wish these recipients all the best for the year ahead as we move through these difficult times and I look forward to a time where we can once again host everyone together for an awards night that signifies the community spirit here in the St George area,” Mr Coure said.

Recipients include lifelong volunteers like Joan Vaughan and Dorothy Dixon from the Mulga Road Bookshop, community groups like SHARE SMR and local businesses like Club Rivers and Kogarah Indian Bazaar.
